Daniela Hohenwallner-Ries

Policy Expert


Daniela Hohenwallner-Ries, holds a PhD in ecology and is a Senior Policy Expert in the field of adaptation to climate change on European, international, regional and local levels. Besides her activities at Fresh Thoughts she is working at alpS – a Competence Centre for Climate Change Adaptation in Innsbruck, Austria were she is leading the Climate Change Adaptation Unit.

Daniela has more than 15 years of experience in the coordination of national and international climate change projects from various disciplines: For the University of Vienna she coordinated the FP5 project “GLORIA-EUROPE - The European Dimension of the Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments – a contribution to GTOS”, and the FP6 project "GLOCHAMORE – Global Change in Mountain Regions – An Integrated Assessment of Causes and Consequences". After leaving the University of Vienna she worked as an expert for the Environment Agency Austria were she was contributing to different international climate change related projects for the EU and the EEA (e.g. CIRCLE).

Subsequent to her engagement at the Environment Agency Austria she coordinated the Alpine Space project “Alp-Water-Scarce”, a project that aimed at developing water management strategies against water scarcity in the Alps for the University of Savoie, France.

Based on the outputs of different Alpine Space climate change adaptation related projects besides Alp-Water-Scarce, the project “C3-Alps – Capitalizing Climate Change Knowledge for Adaptation in the Alpine Space” was initiated where Daniela was responsible for the transnational project management.

Her most recent projects include the coordination and preparation of the climate strategy for the Province of Tyrol/Austria and for the Province of Salzburg/Austria. Regarding her scientific activities, since 2011 Daniela Hohenwallner-Ries has focused on inter- and transdisciplinary projects/contractual works on climate change adaptation (e.g. climate change impact studies on ski resorts in the Province of Vorarlberg, the project CLIMA-Map ( or the internal participation process of the adaptation strategy for the province Vorarlberg/Austria) and sustainability (e.g. development of the sustainability indicator report for the Province of Tyrol).
