Thomas Thaler

Research Associate


Thomas Thaler is a junior associate in the field of environmental and regional economics. He is presently writing his PhD at the Flood Hazard Research Centre at Middlesex University in London (UK). The research study focuses on national flood risk management and related policies strategies in different European countries.

From October 2008 to July 2010, he worked as a researcher at the Ecologic Institute in Vienna. His main work at Ecologic concentrated on water management, especially on the implementation of EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), and linking water issues to other environmental issues such as the EU Common Agriculture Policy, environmental economics and spatial planning. Recently, he was involved in projects on economic analysis of water services, evaluation of economic implementation of WFD-economics aspects, interaction of water management and interaction of rural development policy and water management.

From 2003 to 2009, he studied business administration at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. In 2008 he attended an Erasmus exchange program at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. From 2004 to 2010, he studied international development at the University of Vienna, focussing on environmental, regional, public and development economics. He additionally possesses a certificate as Waste Management Adviser under Austrian law.
