Mainstreaming of CCA at the local level: Launch of a Climate Change Adaptation Initiative for Cities within the framework of the Covenant of Mayors

Building on the success of the Covenant of Mayors initiative in mitigation, the Mayors Adapt initiative aimed to encourage cities, regions and local governments to show leadership on climate change adaptation and support them in developing strategies for concrete action. In creating a direct link between the European and the city level, the initiative shifted and accelerated climate change adaptation action to where the impact was the greatest. The initiative was implemented on behalf of the European Commission by Climate Alliance, Ecofys, Fresh Thoughts and IFOK GmbH. The role of Fresh Thoughts within the initiative was to develop technical guidance on adaptation to climate change in urban areas and to integrate it into the Climate-ADAPT web platform as well as to provide general expertise on adaptation to climate change in urban areas.
