Fresh Thoughts is participating in the EU EMFAF tender ‘Towards IPOS’, which aims to bring together a diverse global network of leading Ocean scientists, interdisciplinary experts, policymakers and civil society stakeholders in support for the establishment of an International Panel for Ocean Sustainability (IPOS).
The proposed International Panel for Ocean Sustainability (IPOS) aims to provide enabling mechanisms at the knowledge-society-policy interface by acting a new gateway to connect knowledge and decisions for a sustainable Ocean. Operating with an inclusive and systems approach, the IPOS intends to broker existing knowledge to deliver demand-driven, independent, timely, contextually relevant and actionable support in response to countries wanting to accelerate their respective commitments to implement international Ocean sustainability targets and frameworks.
The Towards IPOS project aims to establish how an IPOS would strengthen international Ocean governance. It involves analysis of the current effectiveness, salience, legitimacy and comprehensiveness of current global Ocean knowledge organisations and processes, thereby determining the feasibility and rationale for the establishment of an IPOS. This information will feed into the development of the Terms of Reference for IPOS as an organisation, which will be co-developed via wide stakeholder consultation. The project also involves establishing interim Secretariat functions, negotiations to secure a hosting agency, political outreach, communications, and various stakeholder engagement events.
Fresh Thoughts is leading on Task 3.2. on events. In addition, we are contributing to Task 2.2. on IPOS Secretariat functions, aiming to develop a Secretariat plan, including a handover plan and legacy strategy and Task 3.1.. Communication and 3.3. political outreach.
